Parati

ParatiAbout the Paraty
This colonial jewel, which was declared a national monument by UNESCO in 1966, lies on the coast 165 miles (265 km) south west of Rio. Surrounded by beautiful, rugged beaches, numerous islands off the coast, parks with bromeliad plantations and waterfalls, Paraty is a highly desirable tourist destination. Founded in 1660, it gained fame as the chief port for the export of gold in the 18 th century and flourished as a coffee-exporting port in the 19 th century. Its colonial heritage is preserved in the form of elegant colonial Portuguese churches and houses in the relaxed, laid-back atmosphere of a town trapped contentedly in a time warp. Paraty has lots of bars, restaurants, shops and boutiques and is known for it's delicious cuisine as well as being one of the principal Cachaça (sugar cane spirits) distilling regions in Brazil.
